In 1796, the watchmaker Antoine Favre-Salomon from Geneva thrilled his customers with a “self-playing mechanical musical instrument” in a small tin capsule. Today his invention is used almost unchanged in our musical boxes: a key, a spring mechanism, a rotating metal cylinder with small pins on the outside, plucking every single note of the composition on a comb with 18 steel tongues – just like over 200 years ago.
